Ernest Marché, "le Pont Du Grez," Moret-sur-loing
Artist: Ernest Marché (1864 - 1932)
A second superb small painting by Ernest Marché (1864–1932) that pairs well with the first.
It depicts the famous Pont du Grez in Moret-sur-Loing, which was painted by Corot, the first artist to capture this magnificent site.
More recently, Christo wrapped this bridge as a test run before wrapping the Pont-Neuf.
Here, Ernest Marché presents us with a symphony of reddish brushstrokes illuminating the landscape, with a magnificent rendering of the vegetation, the water, and the rooftops, which have taken on a mauve hue beneath the slightly gray sky.
The Dictionary of the Little Masters of Painting describes Ernest Marché’s talent as follows:
“A student of Jules Lefèvre and Tony Robert-Fleury, E. Marché adopts the dreamy tone of certain Symbolist painters in his engagement with nature, which he translates into dominant reddish-brown hues with delicate nuances, incorporating numerous sketch-like notes and rough drafts before completing the final work in his Parisian studio (...)
At the Salon, from 1891 to 1925, he exhibited genre paintings alongside landscapes of the Morvan and the banks of the Loing.
His paintings are in the museums of Troyes, Bourges, Bagnol-sur-Cèze, and Draguignan."
On the back of the painting, the artist has painted a preparatory sketch.
