Exceptional Senneh (Séné) carpet made of kork wool

Persia (Iran) – Late 19th century

Dimensions: 325 × 216 cm

A rare and remarkable Senneh (Séné) carpet woven in Persia in the late 19th century. The workshops of Senneh—now Sanandaj—are among the most prestigious centers of Persian weaving, renowned for the exceptional fineness of their knotting, the elegance of their compositions, and the incomparable quality of their wool.

Made of kork wool, this rug represents the highest level of quality in traditional Persian weaving. Kork wool is taken from the finest and softest parts of the fleece of young lambs, primarily from the neck and shoulders. Its fibers—extremely fine, long, and silky—offer a remarkably soft feel, great durability, and a natural luster that enhances the dyes. This exceptional wool also allows for very precise definition of the patterns.

The rug features a weave density of approximately 8,000 knots per square decimeter, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship of the master weavers of Senneh. This density allows for extraordinary precision in the design and a wealth of detail.

The design consists of an elegant interplay of palmettes, scrollwork, leaves, and finely rendered botanical motifs. These ornaments are inspired by Persian gardens, symbols of harmony, abundance, and beauty. The ever-present palmettes lend the rug great elegance and perfect visual balance.

Its color palette is particularly refined. Deep madder red dominates the composition and harmonizes beautifully with shades of indigo blue, midnight blue, ivory, olive green, golden beige, warm brown, and subtle accents of antique pink. Derived from natural dyes, these colors have retained all their vibrancy and, over time, have developed a rich patina.

With its exceptional dimensions of 325 × 216 cm, its impeccable condition, and the remarkable quality of its wool, this rug is a true collector’s item, intended for the most discerning connoisseurs of Persian art.
