Pomponne Reliquary Decorated With Rhinestones – Restoration Period, First Half Of The 19th Century
An antique pomponne reliquary from the first half of the 19th century, shaped like a heart surmounted by a radiant flame, the traditional symbol of the Sacred Heart.
The piece is adorned with cut rhinestones.
The reliquary opens via a side hinge and contains a compartment designed to hold a relic or a small devotional memento.
The lid is adorned with a delicate Marian monogram “M,” inlaid with rhinestones, evoking the Virgin Mary.
Pomponne, a gilded copper alloy highly prized in the 18th and 19th centuries for its beautiful, gold-like hue, was widely used in the creation of high-quality religious objects and ornaments.
