Icon Of The Mother Of God Eleusa, Batchkovo Monastery, 17th Century

Artist: Vieux Croyants
A beautiful icon of the Mother of God Eleusa from the
Batchkovo Monastery in Bulgaria.
The 16th-century icon from the monastery is located in the monastery’s crypt.
This icon was created about 100 years later by the Old Believers
of the monastery.
In the 17th century, the monastery fell under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction
of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, which was then under Greek rule
, while still belonging to the Ottoman Empire.
In 1083, the Batchkovo Monastery was founded as the second
largest religious community in Bulgaria.
The icon has undergone minor color restoration but is otherwise in perfect condition.
A collector’s label on the back bears an unidentified stamp.
It dates from the second half of the 17th century.
