Stamped “Etienne DOIRAT” – Regency Chest of Drawers ACentral Projecting Panel – Regency Period
A fine commode featuring quatrefoil marquetry and broad cross-banded violetwood veneers.
It has a gently serpentine shape, with a front opening via four drawers arranged in three rows separated by cross-rails.
The carcass is constructed of softwood, as was customary for the period; the drawers are made of walnut.
It boasts exquisite chased and gilt-bronze ornamentation, including mounts for the upper corners (chutes), sabots (feet), drawer pulls, a central escutcheon plate, and an apron mount.
It is topped by a thick, molded slab of Campan Royal marble. This stone originated from the Royal Quarry—opened by decree of Louis XIV in 1684—which supplied Campan marble to adorn the most prestigious buildings in France and around the world.
Stamped twice by Etienne Doirat (few pieces of furniture by Doirat are signed).

One of the few great cabinetmakers of the Regency period.
His furniture is frequently made ofamaranth or violet wood, veneered or inlaid withcheckerboard patterns.
Born into a family of artisans—pottery makers,carpenters—who had been settled in theFaubourg Saint-Antoine, Etienne Doirat was the son of the mason Joseph Doirat andMichelle Ferlu, sister of Pierre-Isaac Ferlu, a master cabinetmaker and merchant.His younger brother Pierre-Michel would, like him, follow thepath of a master cabinetmaker.
It was in the early years of the 18thcentury that he earned his master’s certificate.He worked his entire life on Rue du FaubourgSaint-Antoine for a wealthy clientele, both French and foreign.Often of sublime character, his furnitureis predominantly in the Regency style.
Chests of drawers constitute the bulk of hisoutput. An inventory drawn up on July 14, 1732,mentions a large number of them, “tomb-style” or “Regency-style,” butalso lists several large bookcases, wardrobes, writing desks,regulator clocks, and various models of game or parlor tables.These pieces are frequently made ofamaranth or violet wood, veneered or inlaid withcheckerboard patterns.
Doirat makes extensive use of high-qualityof fine quality—crafted by his team of foundry workers and engravers—wheretraditional elements such as Louis XIV-era mascarons are pairedwith Regency-style female busts or “espagnolettes,” or with various motifs in atypically Rocaille stylors thereafter.
He sometimes adorned the front of his chests ofdrawers without crossbars with a large bronze cartouche, a feature widelyadopted by his success
In this field, Doirat proved himself to be one of thegreat innovators of decorative styles and techniques—the hallmarks ofParisian cabinetmaking during the reign of Louis XV.
