Jacques Adrien Sauzay (1841–1928), “the Banks Of The Seine”

Artist: Jacques Adrien Sauzay
Barbizon School, oil on wood panel, signed lower left, dimensions 50 x 33 cm.

Jacques Adrien Sauzay was a student of the great Italian painter Alberto Pasini, who introduced him to landscape painting. He devoted himself entirely to landscape painting, particularly the Sologne region, whose wildness he adored—the trees with their bizarre shapes, the old dilapidated houses, and the banks of the Seine, whose misty, ethereal effects captivated him.

In 1863, the Count of Moüy acquired “The Bobigny Pond,” and in 1870, the emperor added “A View of the Village of La Garenne” to his private collection. Beginning in 1863, he participated in all the painting salons in Paris, where he received the following awards:

1880, mentioned at the Paris Salon
1881, 3rd class medal at the Paris Salon
1883, 2nd class medal at the Paris Salon (out of competition).

He also participated in the World’s Fairs in Paris, where he won the bronze medal in 1889 and the bronze medal in 1900.
