Venus and Cherubs
Oil on canvas, 31 x 44 cm
With frame, 45 x 58 cm
The work depicts a mythological-allegorical scene set in a celestial realm, identifiable as Venus welcomed to Olympus or an allegory linked to the celestial sphere of love, and was created in the first half of the 18th century. The composition features the goddess as the luminous and central focal point of the narrative, depicted in a languid and sinuous pose as she reclines on a soft and ethereal bed of clouds. At her feet gathers a group of figures; some hold doves—a traditional sacred attribute of the goddess of love—while a cherub holds a transparent crystal sphere in his hands, an allegorical element symbolizing perfection, the harmony of the cosmos, or divination. The flying cherub solemnly carries a lamp with a burning flame, an explicit visual symbol of the everlasting fire of passion and the intellectual light of love. From a stylistic perspective, the canvas crystal-clearly documents the elegant transition from the final expressions of the late Baroque to the sophisticated lightness of European Rococo, clearly oriented toward the French classicist school—following in the footsteps of masters such as François Boucher or Charles-Joseph Natoire — or toward the excellence of 18th-century decorative painting in the Roman and Bolognese traditions. The markedly diagonal composition is complemented by a soft, nuanced brushwork, with extraordinary attention to the rendering of atmospheric transitions among the clouds and the smoothness of the skin tones, enhanced by a luminous palette dominated by pastel hues, clear blues, and golden hues.
