Large Tapestry "Verdure aux Oiseaux" – Flanders, Oudenaarde, 17th century (2.45 m x 3.40 m)

A large and magnificent wool and silk tapestry from the Flemish workshops, characteristic of Oudenaarde production from the second half of the 17th century (Louis XIV period).

The central panel depicts a wooded landscape with great depth, rendered in shades of blue, green, and ochre typical of Flemish verdures. In the foreground, amidst richly detailed low-lying vegetation, two large birds (pheasants or waders) come to life.

This tapestry is particularly distinguished by its very rich and wide original border in the architectural Baroque style, adorned with an elaborate decorative program:

  • At the top: A central cartouche containing a bust in antique profile.
  • On the sides: Two medallions featuring mythological figures, including a delicate Cupid with a bow on the right side.
  • At the bottom: A masterful composition consisting of two imposing putti (cherubs) supporting a central escutcheon on a blue background depicting two figures, the whole crowned by a Baroque shell.
  • At the corners: Four large circular medallions featuring lavish baskets of flowers.

This monumental piece, with its carefully chosen dimensions (2.45 m wide by 3.40 m high), offers an exceptional decorative presence and a beautiful freshness in its original colors. Ideal for a prestigious interior, a large living room, or a collection of period art.
