Tassili Rock Painting Signed By Georges Le Poitevin

Artist: Georges Le Poitevin
This work draws direct inspiration from the prehistoric paintings of the Tassili n’Ajjer massif in southeastern Algeria. Georges Le Poitevin asserts a connection to the Saharan rock art tradition while introducing a contemporary touch through the arrangement of figures and the vibrancy of the colors. Set against a background of sandy ochres, stylized humanoid silhouettes—featuring elongated torsos and limbs and dynamic postures—interact with one another. Arranged vertically, the figures appear to be engaged in ritual scenes. Le Poitevin employs natural pigments enhanced by more contemporary accents: a deep green contrasts with the dominant ochre, while brilliant white highlights specific silhouettes whose outlines are traced with a fine brush. The composition evokes a sense of ceremony or communal trance. In the bottom left corner appears the handwritten inscription: “Rupestre du Tassili Sahara G. Le Poitevin.”

Born in Le Havre in 1912, Georges Le Poitevin trained at the School of Decorative Arts and subsequently at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. After winning the Abd-el-Tif Prize in 1945, he settled in Algiers, drawing inspiration from the landscapes and cultures of the Maghreb. His time in the Tassili n’Ajjer massif during the Henri Lhote expeditions of 1949–1950 and 1956–1957 shaped his style, blending rock-art stylization with an ochre palette. Serving as curator of the Tipaza site museum following Algerian independence, he worked to preserve and promote the region's pictorial heritage. He returned to France in 1992 and passed away the following year in Puyloubier, leaving behind a unique legacy that bridges Orientalist art and Saharan aesthetics.
