Napoleon III-style Pendant Lamp Made Of Porcelain And Opaline Glass

Napoleon III-style pendant lamp in gilded bronze, porcelain, and opaline glass.
France, late 19th century.

Decorative French Napoleon III-style pendant lamp, originally designed as an oil lamp and later converted for electric use. The piece combines a gilded bronze or gilded brass frame, a body made of hand-painted polychrome porcelain, and a frosted opaline glass shade.

The porcelain body is decorated with floral bouquets, gilded scrollwork, and a turquoise-blue band at the bottom. It is set within an elaborate gilded metal frame, featuring side handles with scrollwork ending in dragon or chimera heads, lending the piece a historicist character and a chinoiserie-inspired aesthetic.

The upper section features a frosted opaline glass shade in a flared tulip shape, with a wavy edge and engraved floral decoration. The lamp is suspended by three long gilded metal rods or chains, connected to a decorative ceiling rosette adorned with foliage and scrollwork.

The design combines Second Empire historicism, Rococo Revival ornamentation, and dragon motifs inspired by chinoiserie. The lamp was later converted for electric use. The wiring and functionality have not been tested.
