Rambouillet Tableware Set Gien Pottery: 6 Plates & 1 Serving Dish, Hunting Motif

Artist: Gien

A beautiful set from the famous Gien pottery, consisting of six plates and a serving dish, part of the prestigious “Rambouillet” line.

This iconic design, inspired by the great French hunting tradition, was created at the request of the Office of the President of the Republic to adorn the tables at official hunting events at the Château de Rambouillet. The commission was initiated during the presidency of Vincent Auriol, before the set was developed and put into production at the beginning of René Coty’s presidency.

The design, created in 1955 by the painter Jean Bertholle (1909–1996), a leading figure of the New School of Paris, is considered one of the most prestigious achievements of the Gien porcelain manufactory.
Each piece is entirely hand-decorated and depicts the wildlife of our forests and marshes: majestic stags, hares, partridges, pheasants, woodcocks, wild ducks, and autumn foliage are rendered with remarkable artistic finesse and a delicately nuanced color palette. The serving platter, adorned with an imposing stag, is the centerpiece of this collection.

The reverse sides bear the mark “Gien France – décoré à la main,” guaranteeing high-quality craftsmanship. The “Rambouillet” design remains one of the manufactory’s most sought-after motifs today, prized both for its historical significance and its exceptional artistic quality.

The set is in excellent condition, showing only the usual slight signs of wear. It will naturally find its place on a hunting table, in a country home, or within a collection dedicated to Gien pieces and French tableware.

Jean Bertholle (1909–1996) was a leading French painter of the New School of Paris. His work, exhibited in numerous museums and public collections, is distinguished by a masterful command of drawing and color. His collaboration with the Gien pottery factory gave rise to the “Rambouillet” design, which became one of the manufacturer’s most iconic tableware sets and a classic of French tableware from the second half of the 20th century.
