Neptune, God Of Flowing Waters And Springs. After Rubens
Artist: D'après Rubens
18th-century watercolor drawing
Dimensions: 42 x 32 cm unframed
Neptune is depicted from behind, holding a trident in his left hand, his body turned toward the goddess of the sea and his wife, Salacia, his right arm resting on an earthenware jar from which a spring gushes forth.
Neptune was originally the god of running waters and springs. He was identified with the Greek god Poseidon following the Punic Wars and thus also became the god of the oceans.
Neptune was a very important figure for the Romans because he symbolized their naval power.
The watercolor is mounted on a mat and set behind antique, original glass in an 18th-century Louis XVI gilded wooden frame. A painting of this composition was engraved by Vicenzio Vangélisti in the 18th century.
