This still life composition features apples and pears arranged on a plate, set on a white tablecloth with bluish hues placed on a red table. The brushwork is broad and impasto, the colors bold and contrasting: deep reds, tart greens, and luminous blues. The work reflects a spirit akin to Post-Impressionist explorations of volume and color, with a style that at times evokes Cézanne’s approach to rendering fruit or Renoir’s warmth in skin tones—though this is by no means imitation: the artist’s hand remains personal and confident.

We have found no biographical information on this artist who signs as “Le Sauzet.” The painting is therefore notable above all for its own pictorial qualities.

Interesting detail: the reverse side of the canvas bears a sketch of a landscape, likely an earlier study or a reused canvas—a lovely glimpse into the artist’s work, rendered in pastel colors.
