Hippolyte Camille Delpy (1842–1910). The Berneval Pond In Normandy, Circa 1880
The pond at Berneval-le-Grand near Dieppe around 1880, at dusk.
A rare view of a place that no longer exists. The village of Berneval was completely destroyed during World War II and subsequently rebuilt.
Old postcards from around 1900 show the area bustling with people and animals (cows, geese, ducks…).
Delpy also painted a work titled “The Cottage at Berneval” (viewable online). It was indeed during the 1880s that Delpy stayed on the Normandy coast on several occasions.
The indented signature indicates branding with a hot iron; this method predates the future “HCD” stamp on the backs of the painter’s panels, which was introduced in subsequent years to prevent “Delpy-style Daubigny forgeries.”
Hippolyte Camille Delpy, born on April 16, 1842, in Joigny (Yonne) and died on June 5, 1910, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, was a French painter.
