FRANCISCO BARÓN (Madrid, 1931–2006)

Signed and numbered 4/50
Mounted on a bronze base
29 x 16 x 19 cm
This sculpture brings together an ensemble of fleshy, organic volumes, welded and interlaced into a compact mass that reveals, in profile, a stylized face — the brow, nose, and mouth standing out clearly from the cluster of bulbous forms forming the back of the skull. Several elements can be detached from the main body of the work, revealing the modular conception characteristic of the artist's practice. The patina, a nuanced verdigris shot through with coppery browns, brings out the sensual modeling of the forms and their constant oscillation between latent figuration and biomorphic abstraction. The sculpture rests on a cubic bronze base, integral to the whole. The work is mounted on a cubic bronze base, integral to the whole, signed and numbered 4/50, indicating an edition of fifty proofs.
Francisco Barón studied at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid before holding scholarships in London, at Yale, and at Rhode Island. Throughout the 1970s, he characteristically devoted himself to multi-part, movable, and transformable sculptures in metal (and occasionally wood) — works conceived to be disassembled, reconfigured, or displayed in more than one arrangement. The detachable principle observed in the present work belongs directly to this line of research: far from incidental, it reflects a deliberate conceptual approach that the artist pursued across several related sculptures (heads and busts with movable elements, articulated figures), examples of which are now found in private collections.
