Standing Lion Sculpture In Bronze By Alfred-désiré Lanson
Artist: Alfred-désiré Lanson (1851-1898)
A large, 58-centimeter sculpture weighing 33 kilograms, depicting a standing lion. The lion holds an owl it has just captured under its right front paw. With its head held high, it sniffs the surroundings to see if it will be alone to enjoy its prey. The base bears a foundry mark, a guarantee of the metal’s purity, as well as the signature of the artist Alfred-Désiré Lanson (1851–1898). A student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1876 and a medal at the 1889 World’s Fair. Having died young, his body of work is not extensive; this lion is a rare find on the market!
