Portraits of Zouaves
Watercolor
14 x 18.5 cm (30.5 x 34.5 cm with frame)
Signed lower left “V. Adam”
Jean-Victor Adam was a painter, draftsman, and illustrator specializing in military subjects.
This is a watercolor depicting portraits of Zouaves against a landscape background, with a French flag bearer on the right. The uniforms of the soldiers in the foreground are richly detailed. The figures are recognizable as Zouaves, Algerian mercenaries incorporated into the French army during the conquest of Algeria in 1830.
It is also a historical document, featuring numerous figures in the background forming an army in the center, and on the right, other figures alongside a mosque and an official building flying a French flag.
This watercolor can also be dated to the early 1830s based on the Zouaves’ uniforms. A portrait of a Zouave by Eugène Delacroix from the 1830s shows an identical uniform (held at the Moravska Gallery in Brno, Czech Republic).
