Constant Louche (1880–1965) Large Orientalist Landscape Painting: Oasis
Artist: Constant Louche (1880-1965)
Very large Orientalist painting in panoramic format, oil on canvas, signed “Constant Louche à Boghar” in the lower right corner, presented in its original carved wooden Orientalist frame. A beautiful composition (dimensions: 1 m 75 long × 65 cm high / canvas: 1 m 40 × 50 cm) depicting a camp in the Oued Valley, bustling with figures, one of whom is seated at the summit of the mountain on the right, observing the scene. Constant Louche follows in the tradition of Orientalist painters rooted in North Africa. His vibrant, light-drenched landscapes reflect an intimate knowledge of the Algerian landscape, from the valleys of Kabylie to the edges of the Sahara. A discreet yet observant artist, he captures on canvas the variations in hue, the interplay of shadow and dust, the villages clinging to the mountains, and the desert valleys dotted with palm trees. His broad, energetic brushstrokes lend his compositions an intensity that is both sensitive and lyrical, straddling the line between naturalistic observation and pictorial emotion. “What Constant LOUCHE possesses to the highest degree is color—a splendor of tones that makes him ‘the most direct heir to the Venetian colorists,’ says Fernand ARNAUDES, art critic for *L’Echo d’Alger*, writer, and lecturer on art. He was a friend to all the great painters of Algeria, having written monographs on Deshayes and Dinet.
Constant LOUCHE was born in 1880 in Algiers; it was in this city that he began his studies, then moved to Paris to attend the École des Beaux-Arts after receiving a scholarship. He began exhibiting in Algiers in 1907. He is considered one of the finest representatives of Algerian landscape painting. He traveled throughout Algeria, as well as to Morocco and Tunisia.
