Antique Korean/Japanese diving helmet.
1920–1960
A magnificent, classically styled diving helmet made of patinated copper, such as those used by professional deep-sea divers in East Asia. The piece features a rich natural patina with shades of green, brown, and coppery red, the result of years of use and exposure to seawater.
It has two small side windows with decorative mesh protecting the glass.
Removable neck/chest plate with three openings (for air and communication hoses). Wing nuts and hooks all around the neck for attachment to the diving suit.
The oval nameplate, which may have borne the manufacturer’s name, is unfortunately no longer legible due to wear.
The item is in its original condition. Patina and signs of wear are consistent with its age. Many diving helmets from this era had dents on the top, as military and commercial divers often worked beneath the hulls of ships or other structures and would bump their heads.
We acquired this item from the collection of a Spanish collector.
