Signed lower right by the Belgian painter Max Albert Carlier (1872–1938), a specialist in still lifes of flowers, fruit, and farmyard scenes. Working primarily in oil, he traveled extensively in Italy and lived for a time in France (notably in Brittany). His style is characterized by an absolute mastery of light, meticulous realism, and a profusion of colorful floral details, following in the tradition of the great 17th-century masters of the genre
