Rare Inlaid Table Featuring Portraits Of Renaissance Artists
An exceptional and rare 19th-century round table inlaid with various woods and featuring portraits of Renaissance artists.
Diameter 90 cm
Height 77 cm
The tabletop is a true masterpiece of cabinetmaking, celebrating the history of Italian art, particularly the Renaissance.
The richness of detail and the skillful use of different wood tones create an extraordinary pictorial effect and chiaroscuro.
Exactly at the center of the table is a circular medallion with a dark background, decorated with floral motifs, enclosed within a star-shaped frame.
The middle band is the narrative heart of the piece. It features a series of circular medallions bearing the portraits of famous Italian artists, finely rendered in profile. Each portrait is surmounted or accompanied by the respective name inlaid along the edges: Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Andrea del Sarto, Paolo Veronese, Raphael, and Correggio. The medallions are supported by a pair of winged mythological creatures and surmounted by two birds in flight.
The space between the portraits is decorated with motifs inspired by Renaissance grotesques: leaf-like volutes, floral details, expressive masks, and rectangular plaques on a dark background depicting small, mirror-image swans.
Crowning the entire piece, the outer perimeter of the table is encircled by a sumptuous, continuous floral garland.
This table is a true rarity, a precious testament to 19th-century cabinetmaking excellence that pays homage to the geniuses of the Renaissance, destined for the most refined collections.
