Great 16th-century Italian Painting On Panel, Sacred Conversation
An important 16th-century Italian painting. A tempera on panel artwork of remarkable pictorial quality, with monumental original carved and gilded carpentry. The altarpiece depicts a Sacred Conversation with the Madonna and Child flanked by Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena. Below, a group of kneeling devotees receives rosary beads from Jesus in an intense moment of prayer. The clothing, with elegant ruffs and rich 16th-century-style robes, suggests that the patrons were local nobles or members of a confraternity.
This artwork can be attributed to the Renaissance artist Boniforte Oldoni the Younger (1520-1585), a leading exponent of Piedmontese painting in the second half of the 16th century (the painting is not currently accompanied by an expertise, but one can be requested upon payment of the relevant additional costs).
The most remarkable element of the artwork is the exceptional decorative apparatus surrounding the main scene. An architectural frame with a gilded arch encloses the composition, while a rich cycle of tondos depicting episodes from the life of the Virgin and Christ runs along the entire perimeter. The side pilasters are decorated with refined candelabra motifs executed in gold, while the upper corners feature elegant ornamental scrolls. In the left corner, a marvelous cherub carved in high relief survives, no longer present on the right (see photo). The ensemble still retains the appearance of a large Renaissance altarpiece, a rare example of Italian devotional painting.
This panel is intended for collectors of early period paintings, foundations, religious institutions, and sacred art enthusiasts. Due to its imposing size and striking visual impact, the painting is ideally suited to large state rooms, libraries, private chapels, and historic homes. This painting has undergone some restoration and carpentry work, and presents some woodwork defects and paint loss (see photo). Overall, it is in good condition.
