Cornelis Verbeeck (circa 1590 – Circa 1631, Amsterdam), A Follower Of
Verbeeck, the painter of the sea (see Bol 1973, p. 45), Cornelis was a relative of Jan
Symonsz Torrentius (Verbeeck); he announced his marriage on December 6, 1609, to Anna Pietersdr.,
a member of the Reformed Church. They had four children (one son and three daughters). The son is also said to
have been a painter, but nothing is known about his qualifications. He became a member of the Haarlem Guild
in 1610; Verbeeck must have been a turbulent man, constantly involved in brawls
and acts of violence (Giltaij/Kelch 1996).
A painting with a composition similar to the one we are presenting is housed at
the Valenciennes Museum of Fine Arts.
