Ernest GUILLEMER (Senlis 1839-1891 Paris)
Landscape at Samois-sur-Seine
Signed lower left E. Guillemer
Oil on canvas, 55.5 x 46 cm
The ARTIST
Ernest Guillemer was a French landscape painter of the 19th
century attached to the
Barbizon school. He exhibited at the Salon from 1864. At his first Salon exhibition, he exhibited
2 works: Village de Pourville, près de Dieppe (no. 889, now in the Musée du
château de Flers) and Falaise à mer basse, près de Dieppe (no. 890). He exhibited one or two works here almost
every year until 1890. The artist was active around the forest
of Fontainebleau, but also in the Normandy countryside near Dieppe, near Le Mans, and
along the Seine (notably towards Samois-sur-Seine). His pictorial style is fairly typical of
the Barbizon School, whether in terms of the subjects treated (clearings, undergrowth, ponds, animated
landscapes, rural paths and villages...), the color palette used or the light effects
obtained, which can bring to mind that of Théodore Rousseau. As with most of the
painters of this school, he painted his creations or sketches from the ground up, finalizing them
in his Paris studio, essentially located at 13 rue Duperré.
