August Von Strantz – Knight On Horseback With A Lance, Bronze, Circa 1900.
A bronze sculpture with a nuanced brown patina depicting a knight in armor mounted on his horse, holding a long lance positioned vertically along the side of his mount. The sculpture rests on a naturalistic bronze pedestal, which is in turn mounted on a black marble base.
This work is by the German sculptor August Friedrich Karl von Strantz (1851–1927), a Berlin-based artist who specialized in historical, military, and equestrian subjects. His work is fully in line with the historicist movement that developed in Germany during the second half of the 19th century. Inspired by a renewed interest in the Middle Ages, artists of this period brought knights and cavalry scenes back to life, emphasizing a faithful depiction of armor, equipment, and horses.
Here, Strantz opts for a composition marked by restraint. The knight, lance raised, appears to be pausing rather than in the midst of battle. This restraint allows the quality of the modeling and the naturalistic observation to shine through. The horse’s anatomy is rendered with great accuracy, while the armor, harness, and various pieces of equipment demonstrate remarkable chiseling work.
Our example features a very high-quality cast, enhanced by a deep brown patina accented with golden-brown hues on the helmet, breastplate, greaves, and certain parts of the harness. These variations in tone highlight the sculpture’s form and underscore the finesse of its execution.
This piece, known as *Knight with Lance on Horseback*, is among the artist’s most representative works.
