Artist: Edouard Pannetier (1884-1965)
Charcoal drawing, a design for the 1956 edition of *Splendeurs d'Aix-en-Provence* by J. Bertot in Marseille.
Edouard-Emmanuel-Charles Pannetier, a Provençal painter and Orientalist, was born on November 6, 1884, in Clermont-Ferrand (Auvergne). Having lost his father, a former English teacher, he began his artistic studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in his hometown and then at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Trained as an art teacher, he worked for several years in Algeria at the Lycée Lamoricière in Oran between 1910 and 1920. Upon his return to France, he worked as an art teacher at the high school in Aix-en-Provence around 1930. He painted numerous landscapes and genre scenes of Algeria and Provence. In addition, he illustrated several literary works, notably Chateaubriand’s novel *Atala* in its 1946 edition. He died in Rueil-Malmaison, near Paris, on October 14, 1965, at the age of 80.
