Large Watercolor, Miniature Portrait, 19th-century Nun, 17th-century Style, Abbess
An old watercolor portrait depicting Guyonne de Médavy-Grancey (1608–1670), the first abbess of the Benedictine Abbey of Verneuil. A member of the illustrious Médavy-Grancey family, she led this important religious community for much of the 17th century.
The oval-shaped portrait depicts the abbess dressed in her black monastic habit with a white wimple, wearing a pectoral cross.
The work is presented in its original blackened wooden frame, accented with a gilded brass border.
An engraved brass plaque identifies the subject:
“ Guyonne de Médavy-Grancey – Abbess of Verneuil – 1608–1670”
This is a portrait painted in the 19th century based on an older model.
