Bronze Sculpture “the Little Water Carrier,” Signed Dubois – Late 19th Century

Artist: Dubois
This charming bronze by Dubois reveals the sculptor’s talent for capturing the liveliness and emotion of late 19th-century genre scenes. The figure—a young boy, a street crier with a disarming naturalness—is depicted in spontaneous motion: his torso slightly leaning forward, one hand raised to his mouth as if to call out or make an announcement, while the other clutches a small jug—an emblematic attribute of the young water carriers and street vendors of the era.

The modeling is exceptionally refined: the folds of the clothing, the seams, the patched areas of the pants, the slightly open shirt, and the soft hat come together to form a lively silhouette, imbued with a tender and narrative realism. The bare feet, superbly rendered, anchor the scene in a folk realism cherished by naturalist sculptors.
The brown patina highlights the volumes and the play of light on the bronze’s surface. The piece rests on a perfectly proportioned pedestal of veined red Griotte marble, which reinforces the sculpture’s presence.
Signed “Dubois” on the base, this sculpture is a sensitive and authentic work, ideal for an interior that blends charm and character.
