Seascape in Stormy Weather Near the Shore, oil on wood panel (marked “Antwerp”), dimensions 42 cm x 54.5 cm, 58 x 70 cm (with frame), by Cornelis Mahu (1613–1689).
The scene depicts a sailing ship maneuvering in rough seas under a heavy, dramatic sky typical of Mahu.
On the main ship, the sails are partially furled, with tiny yet highly expressive figures on board. The turbulent sea features short but powerful waves, rendered in light impasto with highly graphic white crests. On the shore, a small thatched-roof cottage and wind-swept trees, among which peaceful animals (cows, sheep) graze, create a narrative contrast between the turmoil at sea and the pastoral calm. 
A dramatic sky with dark clouds and patches of light creates a chiaroscuro effect that structures the entire scene.
This panel forms a pair with the previous painting, which is of the same format and technique, confirming its original conception as a decorative pendant, typical of Antwerp art production in the mid-17th century.
