Large commemorative cup in solid silver. Brussels, 1831–1868. Silversmith Jean-François Dufour. And assayer’s mark of Nicolas Laurent Joseph Monoyer. Second title. 833/1000. Weight 3,490 gr. Height 58 cm. Base diameter 19.5 cm. Length including handles 27 cm. Engraved on the flag with the words: courage, devotion, humanity, prudence. And “gratitude” on the side of the ship. On October 28, 1857, part of the Pavillon Septentriona at the large warehouse in Antwerp collapsed. Soldiers from the garrison were mobilized for the rescue operations. On January 5, 1859, De Marteau, captain of the engineering corps, received a solid silver cup. The hand on the mast refers to Antwerp.Created by Jean-François Dufour, based on a drawing by Frans Durlet (1816–1867). A rare piece of silverwork of exceptional quality and of historical value.
