This bust by the Lyonnais sculptor, Marguerite Monot, depicts the Chinese painter Fu-Shi Sun, who was a resident at the Franco-Chinese Institute of Lyon, founded in 1921, and located in Saint-Irénée. At the same time, Sun was a student at the Lyon School of Fine Arts. Sun exhibited at the Lyon Society of Fine Arts in 1923, 1924, and 1930. For a time, it appears that Sun boarded with Monot, and the portrait reveals the empathic connection between the sculptor and model. Beyond being a portrait, this work illustrates a fascinating moment in the cultural ties between Lyon and China.
