A landscape of the Fontainebleau Forest animated by walkers, likely a view of the sandstone quarries that made the site famous among the Barbizon painters and their followers. The brushwork, lively and concise, sensitively conveys the rugged, mineral character of the place—cliffs and rocks dominating the composition—while the barely sketched silhouettes at the top of the escarpment introduce a picturesque touch characteristic of the Barbizon aesthetic. The work is part of the tradition of French intimist landscape painting pioneered by Corot and the painters of the 1830s generation; through the freedom of its brushwork, it foreshadows the developments of Impressionism.
