Antique Savoie Muleteer Plaque, Vallet Joseph, Dated 1838

An attractive antique French brass muleteer's plaque (plaque muletière), engraved with a traditional radiating rosette and star motif enclosed within concentric borders.

The plaque bears the engraved inscription:

Vallet Joseph

1838

A further inscription appears around the lower border but is now too worn to be read with certainty.

Plaques of this type were mounted on the harnesses of mules and were both decorative and symbolic, often identifying the owner and serving as a mark of pride. Such plaques formed an important part of the material culture of rural and mountain communities where mule transport played an essential role.

This example retains its original hinged attachment and displays attractive hand engraving throughout. The date of 1838 places it firmly within the first half of the nineteenth century when mule transport remained vital throughout the French Alps and other mountainous regions.

This plaque is one of three antique muleteer plaques from the same collection currently offered for sale.

Diameter: 16.6 cm.

Good condition with age-related wear and patina. Wear to parts of the inscription consistent with age and use.
