“A SHORT OF HOMECOMING,” 2018
A major work by contemporary Thai artist Somsak Hanumas, titled A Short of Homecoming, created in 2018.
Acrylic on canvas presented in an elegant American-style frame. The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Mr. Dominique Sibade on May 10, 2021.
With its monumental dimensions and remarkable visual presence, this composition perfectly illustrates the unique artistic universe developed by Somsak Hanumas over nearly two decades.
Born in 1980 in Thailand, Somsak Hanumas belongs to a generation of artists for whom painting transcends mere representation to become a truly contemplative experience. Self-taught, he has developed an extremely demanding technique that requires patience, concentration, and perfect mastery of his brushwork.
After preparing the background of his canvas, the artist meticulously applies a multitude of colored dots arranged in carefully crafted gradients. He then covers the entire surface with a complex network of overlapping fine lines, creating a fascinating visual vibration that constantly transforms the viewer’s perception of the work depending on viewing distance and ambient light.
This particularly time-consuming and meditative working method requires between eight and twelve weeks to complete a single canvas. For the artist, this repetition of the gesture becomes a reflection on time, memory, and the very meaning of existence.
Somsak Hanumas draws his inspiration from the landscapes that shaped his childhood and life in Thailand: endless beaches, fields swept by the monsoon, jungle edges, and horizons bathed in tropical light. The artist transforms these memories into poetic compositions where abstraction and the inner landscape converge.
The artwork thus becomes a space for contemplation open to the viewer’s interpretation, making each encounter with the canvas a unique experience.
Somsak Hanumas’s work has already been included in prestigious international collections, including the Wallroos Foundation in Finland, the Mikati Collection in Lebanon, the Bernard Magrez Collection in Bordeaux, the Vermeer Collection in the Netherlands, and several venues belonging to the LVMH Group.
