William Sartorius : Very Large "still Life With Fruits"
WilliamSartorius (active in London during the second third of the 18th century) : enormous“Still Life with Fruit,” oil on canvas, 107 × 111 cm, mounted in a carved and gilded wooden frame, 119 × 123 cm (aged gilding).
Relined, minor restorations.
Signed and dated : W. Sartorius Pinxit A° 1739 for William Sartorius, painted in the year 1739.
Little is known about this artist, who is not listed in the Bénézit, except that he was active in London around 1730–1740, to such an extent that his signed worksare regularly attributed to George William Sartorius (1759–1828),even though he—though likely from the same family (son?grandson? nephew?)— was born well after these works were created !
The very large format of this still life, combined with the realism with which the various fruits and leaves are painted, standing out against a deliberately dark background, gives it a rich and warm feel worthy of an English manor house !
