Portrait Of A Saint In Prayer, 1700
Portrait of a Saint in Prayer, 1700 The painting depicts an elderly saint in prayer, turned in three-quarter profile to the left. The figure, characterized by a thick beard and sparse golden-blond or brown hair, has his eyes closed and his head tilted backward in an attitude of deep devotion or penance. His hands are clasped over his chest in a classic gesture of prayer. The outline of a thin circular halo is visible above his head. The iconography strongly suggests a depiction of Saint Peter the Penitent (typically portrayed as an elderly man, bearded, and in tears or prayer) or, alternatively, a hermit saint or apostle. This is an antique painting on canvas with widespread losses in the lower portion. The color palette is warm yet somber, dominated by a dark, almost black background that makes the figure stand out in a chiaroscuro style of Baroque origin (inspired by 17th-century styles). The saint wears a robe or cloak in a deep red/brick color, over a tunic with ochre and golden hues. The highlights on the fabrics and beard are rendered with graphic, vibrant brushstrokes. The work shows evident and significant signs of aging and structural damage: on the right side (at the level of the saint’s shoulder), there is a severe loss of material with complete loss of the support and paint; there are other small, scattered areas of paint loss, particularly on the face and chest.
