Beguinage Furniture, From The Ursuline Convent In Valenciennes
Artist: Ebéniste Nord-flandres
Rare and Interesting Small Beguine House
Typical of Flanders: The Beguines, who formed autonomous communities in buildings
built around a tree-lined courtyard, led a life of pious but active penance in workshops and infirmaries.
While they were expected to be modest, they were not required to live in poverty.
The austere furniture of the beguinages therefore reflects a quality, simplicity, and rigor consistent with their demanding
form of devotion.
For a comparable example, see *Furniture of the Belgian Provinces and French Flanders*, page 47.
Provenance: Community of the Ursuline Convent in Valenciennes.
Made of oak and dating from the Renaissance period.
Small section of a joint-covering molding is missing, as well as a small shelf.
Good condition.
Height 85 cm
Length 90 cm
Depth 47 cm
