The Myth of Dejanira:
As Heracles and his wife attempt to cross the Evinos River, which is in full flood, the centaur Nessos tells them that he is the ferryman accredited by the gods for his honesty. He offers to carry Deianira on his back so she won’t get wet while Heracles swims across. Heracles agrees, pays the centaur, then throws his weapons onto the opposite bank before diving into the water. Upon reaching the opposite bank, he hears his wife’s screams; turning around, he sees the centaur trying to take advantage of her. Grabbing his bow, he fires an arrow at the centaur. Hera, still determined to bring about the demigod’s downfall, inspires Nessos to carry out his wicked deed and utters his final words. With the arrow piercing his chest, Nessos has just enough time to whisper one last piece of advice to Deianira.
