Table. Wood, Iron. Guadalajara Region, Spain, 17th Century.
Table. Wood, iron. Guadalajara region, Spain, 17th century.
Shows some imperfections. Walnut table, carved in its natural finish, featuring a straight, one-piece top that extends over the sides and is supported by two wooden legs (visible at the front and back). It includes a drawer fitted with a knob and a wooden lock, adorned on the front with two carved lozenges reminiscent of the wood paneling. The legs are joined in pairs at their lower ends (cubes) with a turned “disc” motif, a technique known as “lens turning” due to its shape. This table belongs to one of the most common types of the Castilian school among all antique Spanish furniture, which explains why it is relatively common to find similar examples in major private collections and renowned institutions. It can be compared, for example, to the “Inquisition desk” dating from around 1600, housed at the National Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid, or to several 17th-century sideboards on display at the Cervantes Birthplace Museum (Alcalá de Henares, Madrid) and the Lope de Vega House Museum (Madrid). ·
