Watercolor in a gilded wooden frame adorned with pearls, depicting numerous figures in a scene showing Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, leaving the Conciergerie to be taken to the scaffold at Place de la Concorde for her execution on October 16, 1793.
Although unsigned, this work is typical of the style of Joseph Navlet, a French history painter born in Châlons-sur-Marne on February 11, 1821, and who died in Paris on April 16, 1889. He exhibited regularly at the Salon beginning in 1848. Collections: The Battle of Vercingetorix (Arequipa, Peru); private collection.
