Beautiful oil on canvas, signed "E." in the lower left corner. Deshayes, depicting two young women seated at the edge of a wadi in the orange light of dusk. One, dressed in a loose salmon-pink gown and wearing a blue-green veil, turns toward her companion in a confident manner. The other, draped in a white haik and wearing a red and green headscarf, faces her calmly. Their closeness suggests a quiet conversation, an exchange suspended on the edge of the oasis.

The scene is set within the Orientalist world of Eugène Deshayes, a painter born in Algiers in 1862 and who died in the same city in 1939, known for his views of Algeria, his North African landscapes, and his light-drenched compositions. Our painting evokes daily life in North Africa in the late 19th century, where the watering hole becomes a place for women to meet, rest, and socialize. The wadi, the riverbank, the palm trees, and the still reflections come together to form a silent space that is both everyday and poetic.
