An iconic painter of the Provençal school, Jean-Baptiste Olive devoted a large part of his work to the shores of Marseille, capturing the variations in light and the maritime atmospheres with remarkable sensitivity. Born in Marseille in 1848, he remains one of the most important French marine painters of his time, celebrated for his views of the Mediterranean coastline and the Old Port.

This composition offers a view of the port of Marseille from Île des Eyglaudes, off the northern coast of the harbor. In the foreground, the light-colored rocks bathed in foam draw the eye toward a deep sea with dark blue reflections.
