Academic Study of a Male Nude, Florentine School, circa 1800

Florentine School, circa 1800.
Charcoal and white chalk highlights on rag paper.
Drawing dimensions: 59.3 × 44 cm.
Framed dimensions: 79 × 59 cm.
Verso: second academic study of a male nude.
Presented in a 19th-century wooden frame.

Important academic study depicting a male nude in a complex pose, probably inspired by a figure of Zeus or by a model derived from classical sculpture. The powerful anatomy, twisting movement and careful modelling of the figure reflect a solid academic training and a particular interest in the study of the human body.

The presence of a second drawing on the reverse considerably enhances the documentary interest of the sheet. Executed with a freer and more rapid hand, this additional study offers direct evidence of academic drawing practice, where every available surface was used for exercises based on observation of the human figure.

The tension of the forms and the monumental character of the figure recall the enduring influence of Michelangelo on Italian artistic education between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

The sheet is executed on traditional rag paper. It still preserves impressions left by the fabrics and felts used during the papermaking and drying processes, tangible traces characteristic of handmade paper produced before industrialisation.

The drawing comes from a group of academic sheets, anatomical studies and architectural drawings preserved in an old Tuscan residence associated with Onofrio Boni (1746–1817), scholar, aristocrat, author of an important study on Pompeo Batoni, and an active figure within the artistic circles of Florence and Rome.

Good condition. The drawing has been professionally mounted on conservation board, allowing inspection of the reverse while ensuring the long-term stability and preservation of the sheet.
