Statue - Monk With A Book - Oak Sculpture - France - 16th Century - 67 Cm
Statue of a monk holding a book - Late 16th century
A full-relief sculpture in oak depicting a young, beardless religious saint standing, dressed in a long monastic habit with a short cape and holding an open book with both hands against his chest. The elongated face, with half-closed eyelids and a contemplative expression, is beautifully expressive, particularly evident in profile. The medium-length hair, styled in a chiseled cap and encircled by a headband, frames features marked by solemnity.
Depiction of a holy monk, a devotional figure designed for a niche or altarpiece (the reverse side is roughly finished). The open book, held against his chest, identifies him as a learned cleric, doctor, preacher, or founder of an order. The attribute that accompanied him, now eroded, no longer allows for a definitive identification.
