ARMCHAIR IN TURNED AND TWISTED WALNUT – FRANCE, 17TH CENTURY
Elegant and authentic solid walnut armchair from the 17th century, a remarkable example of French furniture from the reign of Louis XIII and in the tradition of high-quality provincial workshops.
This piece captivates with the richness of its turned work and the decorative presence of its spiral elements, characteristic of productions from this period.
The high backrest is structured by powerful turned posts topped with toupies, framing a series of balusters finely carved. The scalloped crossbars lend an elegant visual lightness to the piece while highlighting the craftsmanship of 17th-century cabinetmakers.
The armrests feature superb spiral turning, an emblematic motif of Louis XIII furniture, whose helical movement elegantly animates the silhouette.
The structure rests on four sturdy legs, also turned, connected by an extensive network of struts, some of which are twisted.
These antique joints, crafted using traditional techniques of the era, give the piece remarkable stability. Despite being over three centuries old, this chair remains fully functional and can still be used daily.
The upholstery features two cushions made of 17th-century antique tapestry, crafted according to the customary practice for seating of the era. Seats were frequently composed of an upholstered base designed to accommodate removable cushions intended to enhance comfort while allowing for easy replacement of the fabrics. Signs of wear.
The piece is in particularly good condition for a piece of furniture of this age.
There is some wear, minor imperfections, and maintenance restoration.
