Important SHAMAN’S GURGLE - GOURD

Large rattle consisting of a hollowed-out calabash and a cylindrical wooden handle. The musical instrument is heavily filled with seeds and sand and features an openwork design painted with genipap – a fruit whose pulp is characterised by black pigments – arranged around a geometric frieze.
A strap of braided red cord, adorned with horn beads – likely from a tapir.
Collected in situ by the renowned ethnographer and indigenist João Américo Peret in the late 1950s.
