Statue Andromeda By Domenico Menconi (1879) White Carrara Marble
Artist: Domenico Menconi (1879)
CENZI’s recommendation for you is: A statue depicting Andromeda, masterfully hand-carved by the sculptor Domenico Menconi (1879) from a single block of fine white Carrara statuary marble • Focus on the work: The statue captures the mythological figure of Andromeda in a moment of vibrant lyricism, as she clutches a richly draped tunic. Menconi’s mastery is evident in the rendering of the drapery; the marble loses its stony rigidity to transform into a light, almost impalpable fabric that caresses the forms with virtuous realism and rare sensitivity • Condition: EXCELLENT • Dimensions: 105 cm high × 55 cm wide × 50 cm deep (150 kg). The work rests on a capital made of fine antique serpentine marble, bringing the total height to nearly 3 meters. The photos clearly demonstrate its well-proportioned and imposing nature. Biography: Domenico Menconi (Avenza, 19th century) was a refined Italian sculptor active in the second half of the 19th century, one of the leading exponents of the Apuan tradition that combined academic rigor with the great craftsmanship required for working with marble. Born in Avenza (Massa-Carrara), Menconi trained at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, at the time an international center for marble sculpture. He later moved to Florence, where he opened his own studio. His artistic style follows the lines of Neoclassicism and 19th-century Purism, with a clear transition toward Realism. He is particularly renowned for his extraordinary technical skill in working with marble surfaces, evident in the softness of the flesh tones and the virtuosity of the drapery, qualities fully reflected in the splendid rendering of the veils in his Andromeda. An artist of international renown, Menconi exhibited successfully in major exhibitions (including the famous 1854 Florence Exposition). His fame extended beyond Italy’s borders: the artist created numerous imposing monuments, and many of his works (including portraits and genre sculptures, such as the famous Benjamin Franklin of 1877 and Innocence) are now part of prestigious private collections and regularly appear in major international auctions, attracting constant interest from art collectors. Recently acquired by our Cenzi Art Gallery from one of the most important and selective auction houses in the United Kingdom, the work already possesses a certificate of free circulation from the Ministry of Culture.
