Pair Of Wrought Iron Rings
A pair of wrought-iron rings, engraved with figurative designs and showing traces of lacquer. Since the Middle Ages, these types of objects have been embedded in the walls near city gates—primarily in Tuscany—or in the walls of noble residences to tether horses. Some rings are still visible at the gates of Florence (Porta Romana, Porta San Frediano) and on various noble palaces, such as Palazzo Strozzi—the most famous example, featuring rings and all the ironwork crafted by the renowned blacksmith Niccolò Grosso, known as Caparra, around 1500. In addition to Florence, a large number of these artifacts were produced in Siena, Lucca, Pistoia, and Prato.
