" Lively Beach " Robert Savary ( 1920 - 2000 )

Artist: Robert Savary ( 1920 - 2000 )

SAVARY, Maurice Robert

Born April 20, 1920, in Paris. 20th century. French.

Painter of nudes, portraits, interiors, animated landscapes, landscapes, urban landscapes, water landscapes, seascapes, still lifes; watercolorist; painter of murals; stained-glass designs; illustrator; lithographer.

He was a student of Nicolas Untersteller and Maurice Brianchon at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1940 to 1949. He stayed in Madrid in 1948–1949, then in Italy, from where he returned in 1950 with the Prix de Rome. Upon his return, he was appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen. Since 1957, he has lived in Paris and spends most of his summers in Collioure.

He has exhibited in the traditional Paris Salons and in various group exhibitions: since 1946, the Salon de Mai and the Salon des Tuileries; from 1949, the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon des Moins de Trente Ans; 1952, the 2nd São Paulo Biennial; 1955, Galerie Drouant-David and Galerie Charpentier, Paris; 1960, Musée Galliéra, Paris; since 1961, Salon Comparaisons; 1962, 1976, Galerie Guiot, Paris; as well as at the Salon des Artistes Français, the Salon d’Automne (of which he is a member), and the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.

He has held solo exhibitions in various French cities,

as well as in Düsseldorf in 1986. He has received various awards and honors, including: 1975 gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, 1985 silver medal at the Salon de la Marine in Paris, and a gold medal two years later.

In his early period, under Hispanic influence, he oriented his palette toward browns and grays, and his worldview was shaped by Cézanne’s principles. Traces of Édouard Pignon’s influence could then be seen in his paintings. Very quickly, he let his own nature take over, choosing to interpret the landscapes that moved him during his random walks. He created large-scale paintings dedicated to the landscapes of Normandy and the Mediterranean South, as well as various views of Paris—from Montmartre Hill (one of his favorite subjects) to Notre-Dame—featuring famous buildings or the bustling crowds of working-class neighborhoods. He also created large decorative panels: 1956 Palais des Consuls in Rouen; 1960 École nationale de la Marine marchande in Nantes; 1961 Halles aux Toiles in Rouen; 1965 Lycée Claude Monet in Le Havre. He created stained-glass windows in the Ardennes region. He also illustrated Saint-Exupéry’s *Night Flight* and Eugène Dabit’s *The Suburbs of Paris*.

A poet of color, it is his joie de vivre and his passionate love of nature and the world around him that he invites us to share. According to Raymond Cogniat, “white becomes for him a color, as it was for Bonnard, rich in subtleties; a way of highlighting the full range of tones and harmonizing them through light, through freshness...”
