Lidded Blue-and-white Porcelain Jar From The Chinese Shipwreck Off Vung Tau (kangxi Period) #2

Another example of a lidded vase on a ciborium-shaped foot, made of white porcelain and painted with a floral design in cobalt blue underglaze. Recovered from the Chinese shipwreck off the coast of Vung Tau, Vietnam, dated by archaeologists to 1690 (during the reign of Emperor Kangxi).
Intended for re-export to Holland via the port of Batavia—now Jakarta—this shaped piece was likely meant to hold jam or sugar (costly commodities at the time). A large glass engraved with the effigy of William III, on display at the Rijksmuseum, certainly served as a model (see the last photos).
It has been cleaned of marine deposits. It has a slightly satiny finish due to its long stay in the water but is in perfect condition.
